Under the supervision of the Medical Officer (Health): performs routine analytical laboratory testing in the disciplines of Haematology, Chemistry, Blood Banking and Serology utilizing specialized automated equipment towards enhancing patient care.
Qualification and Experience:
- Graduate of an accredited tertiary level institution with a B.Sc. Degree in Medical Technology
- Successful completion of the prescribed period of internship
- Obtain registration by the Council of Professions Supplementary to Medicine
- Possess at least 2 years of laboratory experience.
Specific Knowledge/Required Skills/Competencies:
- Ability to maintain professional standards and satisfactory working relationships.
- Good oral communication skills. Good interpersonal skills.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
- Willingness to work with the realization that errors may have serious consequences for patients and to work with infectious materials.
- Ability to collect specimens from secure co-operation of a variety of types of patients, some of whom are in disturbed conditions.
- Attention of details and ability to work under pressure in completing tests in emergency cases.
- Ability to use microscope for long hours and hazards involved in handling chemicals and infectious materials.
- Considerable initiative and judgement involved in identifying abnormalities and responding to STAT requests.
Key Responsibilities
- Receiving samples, records description, prepares slides, stain tissues, makes microscopic examinations.
- Preparing simple re-agents for use in clinical laboratory tests.
- Cultivating pathologic bacteria and other microorganisms for detection and identification of diseases such as typhoid, cholera, tuberculosis, diphtheria.
- Taking blood samples, carries out qualitative screening of all blood serum, performs tests to identify abnormalities such as sickle cell, anemia, coagulation disorders, hypertension and diabetes.
- Preparing films of blood to determine white blood cells differential cell count and identify blood group.
- Prepares serological samples to provide qualitative and quantitative analysis of antibodies to specific diseases.
- Keeping files of tests completed and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Giving guidance to Technical Assistant and evaluates job functions of the Technical Assistant and submits evaluation to the Medical Officer (Health) for review.
- Performing emergency duties.
- Participating in seminars, workshops and conferences.
- Making routine checks of machines and equipment and reports any in aspect of malfunctioning.
