How to Write a Standout Cover Letter

A great cover letter doesn’t just summarize your resume. It adds context, shows personality, and speaks directly to the employer. Think of it as your personal sales pitch.

Start with a tailored greeting if you can—use the hiring manager’s name. Then, your first paragraph should answer one question: why this company? Be specific. Maybe their mission aligns with your values, or you’ve admired their work from afar. A strong opening makes you memorable.

The middle section should focus on value. Choose 2–3 highlights from your resume that match the job description. Be concrete. “Managed a team of 6 and completed the project two weeks ahead of deadline” works better than “Team player with leadership skills.”

Include a short story or example if possible. Maybe you solved a problem creatively or led a community initiative. A real example can show that you don’t just talk the talk.

Finally, close with a polite but clear call to action: “I would welcome the opportunity to contribute to your team and discuss how my skills can support your goals.” End with “Sincerely” or “Best regards.”

Keep it one page, proofread thoroughly, and avoid overused phrases like “I’m a hard worker.” Let your achievements do the talking.
