We are seeking a skilled and motivated Infrastructure Technician to join our IT team. This role is central to the reliable operation, maintenance, and security of our enterprise IT infrastructure. The successful candidate will manage and support a VMware-based virtualization environment running on Windows Server, administer our Veeam backup and replication ecosystem (spanning immutable local storage, offline media, cloud repositories, and an offsite disaster recovery site), and contribute to continuous infrastructure improvement projects. You will work within a team responsible for ensuring maximum system availability, data integrity, and rapid recovery capabilities in the event of an incident. This is a hands-on technical role that requires strong analytical skills, a proactive mindset, and a commitment to best practices in systems administration and data protection.
Key Responsibilities
Virtualization &Server Administration
• Administer and maintain the VMware vSphere/ESXi environment, including host management, vCenter operations, and virtual machine lifecycle management.
• Perform capacity planning, resource allocation, and performance tuning across the virtual infrastructure.
• Deploy, configure, and manage Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) virtual machines and physical hosts.
• Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and related Windows infrastructure services.
• Apply OS and VMware patches and updates in accordance with the change management process.
• Monitor hypervisor and guest performance using vCenter alerts, event logs, and third-party monitoring tools.
Backup, Recovery & Data Protection (Veeam)
• Administer and maintain the Veeam Backup & Replication environment across all tiers of the backup strategy.
• Manage immutable local backup repositories (hardened Linux repositories or similar) to protect against ransomware and accidental deletion.
• Oversee offline/tape or removable media backup jobs, ensuring media rotation schedules, cataloguing, and secure offsite storage procedures are adhered to.
• Configure and monitor cloud backup repositories (e.g. Azure Blob, AWS S3, or equivalent) to ensure encrypted, offsite copies are maintained to retention policy.
• Manage Veeam replication jobs to the offsite disaster recovery (DR) site, validating replication lag, RPO/RTO targets, and failover readiness.
• Conduct regular backup verification tests (SureBackup / automated restore testing) and document results.
• Respond to and resolve backup job failures promptly; perform data restores at file, application, and VM level as required.
• Maintain and review Veeam job schedules, retention policies, and storage consumption reporting.
Disaster Recovery
• Participate in the planning, testing, and documentation of DR failover and failback procedures.
• Ensure the offsite DR site remains in a tested and production-ready state.
• Contribute to and maintain the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) documentation.
• Assist with tabletop exercises and live DR tests on a defined schedule.
Storage & Networking
• Maintain storage infrastructure supporting VMware datastores, including SAN/NAS/DAS and object storage configurations.
• Support network infrastructure including switches, VLANs, and firewall rules as they relate to server and backup traffic.
• Assist with the management of backup network segments to ensure isolation and performance of backup data flows.
Monitoring, Reporting & Documentation
• Monitor infrastructure health, capacity, and availability using centralized monitoring tools; respond to alerts within defined SLA.
• Produce regular reports on backup success rates, storage utilization, replication health, and DR readiness.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date infrastructure documentation including topology diagrams, runbooks, and asset registers.
• Log all incidents, changes, and service requests in the IT Service Management (ITSM) system.
General IT Support & Projects
• Provide Tier 2/3 escalation support for infrastructure-related issues.
• Participate in project delivery for infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and new deployments.
• Collaborate with the wider IT team and third-party vendors to resolve complex issues.
• Maintain software licensing compliance for infrastructure components.

• Solid experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi and vCenter Server administration.
• Proven experience administering Veeam Backup & Replication, including job management, restore operations, and repository configuration.
• Strong working knowledge of Windows Server (2016/2019/2022): Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, File Services.
• Understanding of backup tiers: local disk, immutable storage, offline/tape media, cloud repositories, and offsite replication.
• Experience with disaster recovery planning and execution, including failover/failback testing.
• Familiarity with networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, firewalls.
• Ability to read and interpret system logs, event viewers, and monitoring dashboards.
• Strong documentation skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent problem-solving ability and a methodical, structured approach to fault resolution.
Optional / Desirable Requirements
• VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent VMware certification.
• Veeam Certified Engineer (VMCE) certification.
• Experience with hardened Linux repositories for Veeam immutable backups (e.g. Ubuntu/RHEL-based).
• Familiarity with cloud backup targets such as Azure Blob Storage, AWS S3, or Wasabi.
• Experience with Veeam ONE or similar monitoring/reporting tools.
• Knowledge of SAN/NAS storage platforms (e.g. Dell EMC, NetApp, HPE).
• Experience with Microsoft Azure or hybrid cloud environments.
• Exposure to IT security frameworks (ISO 27001, CIS Benchmarks, NIST).
• ITIL Foundation certification or equivalent experience working within an ITIL framework.
