The Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Administrator, Accident & Emergency (GMG/AM3) at the May Pen Hospital.
JOB SUMMARY:
The position is responsible for:
- Providing administrative support to the Clinical Managers in the Accident and Emergency Department and has responsibility for non-clinical operations of the Department.
- Coordinating the works of the Accident and Emergency Department in conjunction with the portering, janitorial, customer service, security, drivers, maintenance, laundry, stores, CSSD and health records personnel on a daily basis.
- Ensuring that the patients’ needs are met.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Associate Degree in Management/Administration or equivalent
- Certification in Supervisory Management
OR
- B.Sc. in Management Studies or equivalent is a definite asset
- Minimum of three (3) years experience working in a hospital environment

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
- Knowledge of hospital care operations, systems, practices and linkages
- Knowledge of Government guidelines as it relates to procedures in health
- Excellent knowledge of principles, guidelines and processes that governs the Accident and Emergency Department along with the collaborating services
- Knowledge of the history, vision and goals of the organization
- Knowledge of the current trends and development in the health sector
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages, directs and coordinates the administrative and nonmedical functions of the Accident and Emergency Department.
- Collaborates with physicians and other department managers to ensure quality patient care and efficient unit or program operations
- Develops and maintains a system to ensure the adequate and appropriate medical and non-medical supplies and equipment are available on a continuous basis.
- Supervises and coordinates the portering and housekeeping services in order to provide a safe, sanitary and comfortable environment for clients and staff.
- Participates in the preparation, testing and revision of mass and disaster preparedness plans for the hospital.
- Liaises with the Medical Officers (Health) in order to review the referral system and enhance the relationship between hospital and community services.
- Liaises with the Pharmacy, X-ray, Laboratory and Customer Service departments in the maintenance of a system for their services to be readily available to patients in emergency situations.
- Monitors procedures to ensure that patient waiting-time is not unduly prolonged.
- Establishes contact and rapport with other health facilities and agencies to avoid problems that may develop in cases of referrals and transfers.
- Inspects and evaluates the physical conditions and the status of equipment of the department and recommend repairs, refurbishing and replacement of equipment and function where necessary.
- Develops, in conjunction with the maintenance department a preventive maintenance programme for the equipment in the A & E Department.
- Ensures that clients have easy access to the hospital’s complaints process and to assist with the resolution of any problems.
- Maintains budgetary and inventory control.
- Arranges for adequate security in the department.
- Assists with the organization of training sessions and conferences in collaboration with HOD’S and the Human resources department.
- Ensures that staff are exposed to orientation sessions in the department and have copies of/ or easy access to policy and procedure manuals relevant to the A & E Department.
- Coordinates meetings of the A & E Department Quality Assurance Committee.
- Attends committee, management and staff meetings as required
- Communicates pertinent information, special instructions and standards with personnel and considers ideas/suggestions from the staff
- Prepares a monthly report of the Department’s activities for submission to the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Medical Officer for review.
- Attends meetings and carries out any other related assignments as directed by the Chief Executive Officer.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB
- The incumbent will be required to work in a hospital environment beyond normal hours when the need arises including weekends and Public Holidays.
