Under the direction of the Medical Officer (Health), the incumbent has responsibility for the environmental health services in Clarendon for the promotion and maintenance of standards of environmental health safety and control.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Diploma in Public Health Inspection/B.Sc. Environmental Health 
  • Diploma in Meat & Other Foods Inspection 
  • Post-graduate training in Management/Supervisory Management 
  • Registration with the Council Professions Supplementary to Medicine 
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant and progressive experience in Environmental Health and five (5) years’ experience at the supervisory level 

 

Any of the following will be definite assets:

  • Diploma/Certificate in computing or demonstration in the use of computers (MS Word, Power Point & MS Excel) 
  • Training in Project Management 

 

Specific Knowledge Skills and Competencies:

  • Knowledge of Government’s national and health policies and their relationship to environmental health 
  • Knowledge of the Public Health Act, 1974 and laws and regulations relating to public health and, in particular, to the programme areas 
  • Knowledge of new trends and development relative to the programme areas 
  • Ability to coordinate the work of others and to work in a team 
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and manage data and, to prepare the necessary statistical reports 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 

 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and managing information systems on environmental health 
  • Planning and directing environmental health programmes for the Parish in keeping with national health policies and objectives 
  • Implementing environmental health programmes; evaluating their adequacy and adherence to policy and impact on environmental health 
  • Implementing the Ministry of Health & Wellness’ quality assurance programme on environmental health; 
  • Administering the budgetary allocations and preparing annual estimates for expenditures
  • Advising the Medical Officer of Health and the Regional Public Health Inspector on the status of programme operations 
  • Providing technical advice on environmental health to other members of the health team, as well as to other agencies and sectors within the Parish 
  • Participating in the planning, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health programmes in the Parish 
  • Directing epidemiological and other investigations; operational research and other field studies in selected areas of environmental health 
  • Analysing reports and statistics 
  • Undertaking field visits to ensure compliance with the Public Health Act, 1974
  • Monitoring the adherence to established procedures; reviewing and revising as necessary
  • Planning and monitoring field inspections, investigations and surveillance services
  • Participating in the review and implementation of control measures 
  • Participating in the review and application of appropriate technology to environmental health issues 
  • Communicating with other agencies on environmental health problems and recommending remedial action 
  • Conducting staff performance appraisal and making recommendations accordingly
  • Participating in immunization campaigns, and outbreaks of epidemics or disasters
