The Construction Engineer performs technical designs, construction supervision, and monitoring for FCJ sites, while ensuring safety, timely completion, and compliance with industry standards.

 

Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Chief Engineering Manager the incumbent is required to perform Simple Technical Designs, Constructional, Supervisory and Monitoring Duties on any and all of FCJ’s Sites as per directed by the Chief Engineering Manager throughout ALL Phases of the Construction Cycle up to Closing and Commissioning.

 

APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field
  • Experience:
    • Five (5) or more years of relevant experience in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, Building Science, Construction Management or related field Training in Security Management
    • Training in Project Management/Engineering

 

Special Skills & Aptitude:

  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, engineering, electrical drawings, specifications, codes, and other materials pertinent to general construction.
  • Knowledge of construction materials, means and methods.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes, life safety and hazardous materials.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to establish and maintain good professional working relationships.
  • Good computer skill set re Microsoft Office, Microsoft Projects, plus AutoCAD.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must have working knowledge of the basics regarding the practical construction procedures on the site along with the details of how they are planned and logically implemented.
  • Must be able to establish Levels and Survey Controls for New Works, with respect to small New Builds as per Contract Drawings.
  • Must be prepared to travel extensively from one site to the next and frequently.
  • The Construction Engineer is responsible for keeping site diaries and the respective sheets for allocation.
  • For highly dangerous work site, the Construction Engineer must take up the role of Safety Engineer and ensure that the work carried out by the workers and other related activities are as per Industry Standard Safety Regulations of Jamaica. He must also drive the trait of safe working culture and practice at FCJ.
  • Must ensure that the works are completed and delivered without defects and delays.
  • Monitor and inspect work of Construction Contractor for assigned projects on behalf of FCJ.
  • Review Contract Documents, Architectural and Engineering Drawings and Specifications in order to maintain familiarity with the assigned project(s) and ensure Construction Contractor’s full understanding of documents.
  • Review contractors shop drawings and provide comments on non-conformance.
  • Act as liaison between External Engineering Consultants/ Chief Engineering Manager and the Contractor on large Projects.
  • Conduct on-site observation and spot-checks of Works in progress.
  • Provide Reports on all on-site matters, including third-party inspections, progress, safety concerns, and causes for delay and advising the Chief Engineering Manager of difficulties being encountered or likely to be encountered on large Projects.
  • Be familiar with the Legal and Statutory Requirements of the job and checking that the Works comply with them.
  • Having a working knowledge of Health and Safety Legislations and bringing any shortfalls observed to the attention of the Chief Engineering Manager on large Projects.  And must by example wear/use personal protective equipment as needed on Work Sites.
  • Maintain job-site files, documents, reports and daily logs; prepare periodic reports for the Property Manager on a Monthly basis on large Projects.
  • Advising the contractor about certain aspects of the work, particularly when something has gone wrong, “but this advice should not be interpreted as an instruction;” but in Consultation and Approval of the Chief Engineering Manager, issues Site Instructions that have material and cost implications.
