The counselor identifies psychological issues, empowers patients, implements therapeutic interventions, coordinates sessions, collaborates with a healthcare team, maintains records, ensures confidentiality, and provides holistic care.

 

JOB PURPOSE:

Under the direct supervision of the Psychologist, the Counselling Psychologist (HPC/ALH 1) is responsible for providing treatment to patients through counselling by listening to and identifying core problems such as emotional crises, stress, anxiety, and behavioural/mental disorders, building strong, long-term relationships based on trust, and monitoring patient response to treatment over time. 

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identifies psychological, emotional or behavioural issues in patients or as guided by the Clinical Psychology to determine counselling approach 
  • Empowers patients to explore their emotions, develop coping strategies, and make positive changes in their lives 
  • Develops, formulates and implements counselling interventions, therapeutic processes and management plans for patients 
  • Plans, coordinates and schedules patients' counselling sessions 
  • Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, ensuring holistic and integrated care for our patients 
  • Plans and conducts both one-on-one and group counselling sessions 
  • Keeps detailed records of patient mental health history, counselling notes and progress
  • Establishes and maintains positive, trusting and professional rapport with patients
  • Creates individualized treatment plans according to patient needs and circumstances
  • Involves and advises family members when deemed appropriate 
  • Refers patients to specialist services where necessary 
  • Assists with conducting diagnostic tests and developing treatment plans 
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients’ treatment and records in accordance with the Authority’s policy 
  • Participates in clinical training seminars and mentors assistant psychologists, psychology students, and interns on-site 
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Psychologist 

 

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES AND SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE:

  • In-depth knowledge of psychological, emotional or behavioural problems and treatment and intervention 
  • Working knowledge of the public health systems relating to the delivery of healthcare
  • Ability to maintain and complete clinical documentation consistently 
  • Proficient with planning and performing counselling 
  • Knowledge of human behaviour, development and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioural and affective disorders 
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
  • Excellent organization, coordination, problem-solving skills and techniques
  • Critical thinking and keen attention to detail 
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening skills 
  • Highly analytical mindset and critical thinking skills

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB:

  • May be required to work outside of normal working hours, including weekends and public holidays 
  • May be exposed to severe or complex cases 
  • May be required to wear protective gear 
  • May be required to conduct home visits 

 

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • MSc Degree in Counselling Psychology 
  • Three (3) years experience in a similar capacity 
  • Experienced with psychological assessment and counselling of patients with mental health, behavioural and emotional problems
