Reporting to the Director of Nursing Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for supervising, organizing, coordinating and evaluating the nursing service in more than one general patient care unit appropriately.

 

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Certificate/Diploma/Degree in General Nursing and Certificate in Midwifery from accredited Schools of Nursing and Midwifery 
  • Certificate in Nursing Administration or BSc. Degree in Health Services Administration
  • Minimum five (5) years Nursing/Hospital Administration and Four (4) years exclusive experience 

Plus 

  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Jamaica in General Nursing and Midwifery

 

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:

  • Excellent Knowledge of professional Nursing theory and practices 
  • Knowledge of the principles of hospital administration and modern management practices Sound Knowledge of the Nursing, health and related legislation 
  • Working knowledge of the Staff Orders and the Human Resource Policies and Procedures

Key responsibilities will include:

Administration 

  • Preparing rosters and assignments to ensure coverage of the department based on available numbers and levels of staff. 
  • Coordinating departmental activities with those of other departments and units.
  • Investigating critical incidents, unusual occurrences, complaints and takes appropriate actions. 
  • Initiating departmental policies within the overall framework of the Hospital/ Nursing policies. 
  • Preparing reports on various aspects of departmental administration. 
  • Establishing departmental procedures and carrying out periodic audits.
  • Supervising and evaluating level 2 professional staff and review level 1 staff evaluations. 
  • Making daily departmental rounds, assessing clinical and administrative practices, physical environment, equipment, supplies, etc. 

Clinical 

  • Providing clinical consultation to level two and one professional staff.
  • Assisting as necessary with clinical care of emergencies and critically ill patients.
  • Initiating and/or assisting with major procedures. 
  • Ensuring patient acuity level classification system is used for staff assignment.
  • Ensuring appropriate deployment of nursing staff based on education experience and competence. 
  • Introducing creative/Innovative cost of effective measures to improve nursing care delivery system at the departmental level. 
  • Visiting and conferring with patients and relatives. 

Education 

  • Teaching professional and other health workers. 
  • Conducting departmental In-service education and participating in hospital In-service education. 
  • Participating in teaching of Nursing students and students of other disciplines.
  • Acting as preceptor for post basic Nursing students and work experience for student nurses. 
  • Guiding and directing Junior Medical staff and other health professionals.
  • Providing departmental orientation for Nursing, Medical and other Health Care Workers.
