The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja) seeks to identify an experienced professional to fill the position of Deputy President to head the Academic Affairs Division.

 

JOB PURPOSE

Under the direction of the President, the Deputy President provides overall direction of academic support services for development and implementation of standards, policies, procedures and regulations to govern the delivery of the University's academic programmes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. 

The Deputy President is responsible for overseeing the overall academic integrity of the institution. He/she serves on the University's leadership team and works with the President, Vice Presidents, and Deans of the academic programs, the University Council, Academic Board and Committees to carry out the mission of the University. The Deputy President represents the University to stakeholders in a manner determined by the President. In his/her role as Deputy President he/she is responsible for all operations of the University related to academic leadership, curriculum, personnel managcmcnt for the academic division (in conjunction with the Vice President, Human Resources and Administration), and budget planning and fiscal management for the Academic Division. The Deputy President supports and works in partnership with the College/Faculty governance system. On all issues stated, the Deputy President reports directly to the President of the University and deputizes for him in his absence. 



MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION ARE TO:

  • Provides leadership and vision for all academic programmes, academic programme planning and development, educational policy, program assessment, College/Faculty evaluation and development
  • Advises and makes recommendations to the Academic Board, as appropriate on matters relating to education, education policy and strategy at both undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Chairs the Teaching and Learning Committee which is aimed at fostering and encouraging the promotion of best practice in teaching and learning throughout the University
  • Chairs the academic committees for Undergraduate Studies and Graduate Studies, Research and Entrepreneurship.
  • Serves as ex-officio member of Council, Academic Board and College/Faculty Boards as stipulated in the respective Statutes and Ordinances
  • Advances and coordinates the role of graduate education, innovation and entrepreneurship to include third stream income (TSI) at the University. TSI includes consultancies/projects and income outside of tuition Ices and Government grant/subvention
  • Promotes and supports the professional development and competency of the College/Faculty and staff
  • Implements and ensures compliance with all personnel policies as outlined in the College/Faculty Handbook and related university policies
  • Makes recommendations for faculty appointments, promotions, compensation, sabbaticals and other personnel matters including disciplinary actions. 

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • An earned doctorate in a recognized academic discipline supportive of the mission of the University of Technology, Jamaica
  • A distinguished record of teaching, scholarship and research
  • At least 8 years of broad, progressive and substantive academic, managerial and administrative experience.
