JOB PURPOSE:
Under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor the employee performs highly skilled maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting work involved with the Hospital’s electrical systems. Electrical works may be performed in a number of maintenance plants and equipment including generator equipment, boiler, compressors, refrigeration, motors, heating and involves the technical application of electrical principles. A concentrated effort and high degree of skill is required to effect cost savings and control expenditures.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Diploma from a recognized accredited institution in Electrical Installation or any other area in Electrical Works
- At least two (2) years experience in electrical installation.
OR
- National Vocational Qualification - level III certification in electrical installation (preferably from NCTVET), and three years work experience in an acute hospital or large commercial/residential operation.
- Certification in boiler management and the operations and maintenance of generators would be an asset
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Required knowledge:
- Specialized knowledge to analyze and solve complex problems
- Thorough knowledge of electrical theory and methods, materials, tools, equipment, and systems
- Inspection of, identification, and knowledge of all electrical distribution systems (24-440 volts)
- Methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, equipment; safety precautions to be observed in the maintenance and installation of electronic and mechanical equipment
- Thorough knowledge of applicable government codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade
The incumbent must demonstrate the skills and ability to:
- Operate and use required tools and equipment skillfully and safely; install, assemble, maintain, and repair electrical apparatuses
- Analyze and respond safely and appropriately to emergency situations
- Perform preventative maintenance on generators, etc
- Read and comprehend plans and blueprints as appropriate to trade
- Maintain cooperative working relationships
- Effectively demonstrate time and stress management skills
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collects all electrical work orders, generates daily failure or breakdown report for the hospital.
- Reads electrical circuit diagrams.
- Installs, services, and repairs lighting fixtures, electrical panels, outlets and wiring.
- Repairs electrical equipment or appliances by troubleshooting problems, replacing worn parts, switches, fuses, and rewiring electronic motors
- Installs, repairs, and services specialized electrical equipment and machinery following manufacturer’s instructions and safety precautions
- Transfers primary power from one power source to another.
- Request material and supplies from stockroom; calls vendors to discuss needs for parts and supplies, and recommend purchases and suppliers.
- Operates power hand tools and other specialized electrical equipment.
- Installs conductors, splices cable, builds terminations and does necessary hook-up for primary power lines.
- Maintains, reviews, and establishes effective utilization of maintenance log.
- Call external Engineers/Technicians/Maintenance Manager for consultation or to do maintenance above the maintenance level of the Electrician.
- Recommends energy savings measures in conjunction with the Hospital Chief Executive Officer/Operations Manager/Maintenance Supervisor.
- Prepares reports or summaries on the status of utilities (gas, water, electricity, work orders)
- May do other trades work incidental to electrical work as assigned by Maintenance Supervisor/Operations Manager.
