Key responsibilities include:

  • Assess all patients who present to the Emergency Department for care. During the assessment process the physician will work closely with and support other team members, obtain an appropriate history, examine the patient, order appropriate diagnostic studies (ECG, laboratory, diagnostic imaging exams), review the results of the studies that have been ordered, and disposition (either discharge or admit) the patient as indicated.
  • Provide emergency airway management including Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI), as required.
  • Direct resuscitation efforts for those patients who present to the Emergency Department that are either critically ill or are in cardiac/respiratory arrest and accompany them if transferred to ICU, or continue management until a specialist consultant assumes care of the patient or the patient expires.
  • Respond to cardiac arrest calls in ED and on campus, as per most current department protocol  and direct the efforts of the resuscitation team until the patient  is either successfully resuscitated and transferred to the ICU, transferred to the care of another specialist, or expires.
  • Perform life-saving minor surgical interventions (cricothyroidotomy, chest tube thoracotomy,  needle decompression
  • Liaise with family physicians and other practitioners, as needed
  • Responsible for reporting to the Emergency Department to work whenever required, during/after natural disasters, Mass Casualty Incidents or simulation training for these events.
  • May work in the Hyperbaric and Wound Care Unit to provide patient care if appropriately trained and credentialed

 

Required Qualifications/Experience:

  • Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (Canada, UK, USA, Australasia & New Zealand, West Indies) or Consultant with Specialist Registrar Training in Accident and Emergency Medicine (UK), or equivalent qualification.  
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience, 3 of which should be exposure to full-time, post-boards Emergency Medicine
  • Current BLS, ALS/ACLS, APLS/ PALS and ATLS certification
  • Current registration with Medical Council in relevant jurisdiction
  • Eligible to register with Bermuda Medical Council
