Under the direction of the Operations manager, the Farm Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day farm operations aimed at facilitating viable commercial farming in accordance with the farm plan specific to each farm location.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Technical/Professional Responsibilities: 

  • Provide local team leadership, working closely with inmates, Security staff, and administrative support personnel in implementation of farm plans. 
  • Contribute to the unit’s business planning activities. 
  • Oversee crop production operations, such as planning, tilling, planting, fertilizing, cultivating, spraying, or harvesting. 
  • Oversee animal husbandry operations, such as day-to-day care, selective breeding and the raising of livestock. 
  • Monitor and adjust irrigation systems to distribute water according to crop needs and to avoid wasting water. 
  • Inspect orchards or fields to determine crop maturity or condition or to detect disease or insect infestation. 
  • Inspect animals to determine presence of health condition. 
  • Demonstrate or explain agricultural practices, or safety regulations to inmates and Correctional Officers. 
  • Inspect farm equipment to ensure proper functioning. 
  • Manage livestock or crop waste recycling operations. 
  • Coordinate the analysis of soil to determine types or quantities of fertilizer required for maximum crop production. 
  • Supervise the construction of farm structures, such as buildings, fences, drainage systems, wells, or roads. 
  • Provide technical guidance on the purchase of machinery, equipment, livestock, or supplies, such as seed, feed, fertilizer, or chemicals. 
  • Prepare budgets or financial reports for farm operations. 
  • Monitor activities such as irrigation, chemical application, harvesting, , breeding to ensure adherence to safety regulations or standards. 
  • Maintain financial, operational, production, and inmate engagement/ employment records for farm. 
  • Inspect farm structures, such as buildings, fences, or roads, ordering repair or maintenance activities, as needed. 
  • Train and supervise inmates engaged in planting, cultivating, irrigating, harvesting, or marketing crops, or in raising livestock. 

Human Resource Management Responsibilities: 

  • Participates in the recruitment of staff for the unit. 
  • Ensures that all required processes, systems and controls are in place to enable the achievement of objectives effectively and efficiently.
  • Monitors and reviews performance to ensure agreed performance targets are met.
  • Ensures that appropriate communication and knowledge management systems are in place with other Units to facilitate the sharing of relevant information in an accurate and timely manner. 
  • Ensures the timely delivery of information for the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) corporate planning and budgeting process. 
  • Manages allocated budgets and ensures the effective and efficient use of resources.
  • Contributes to public relations and communications for the DCS; 

Other Responsibilities: 

  • The incumbent may, from time to time, be assigned duties not specifically outlined within the job description but are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from a person occupying this position.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • BSc. in Agriculture; 
  • Project Management certification; 
  • Three (3) years’ experience managing a large farm; 
  • Supervisory Management training and experience; 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB

  • Must work well under pressure. 
  • Long work hours. 
  • May be required to work on weekends and public holidays. 
  • Be able to respond to emergencies quickly and efficiently. 
  • Hazardous environment.
