Reporting directly to the Deputy Chief Financial Officer (Acting), the appointee is expected to provide support for the financial management and accounting operations of the Office of Finance.
This is a fixed term contract for one (1) year, for the 2024/2025 academic year – August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025.
The successful candidate is expected to perform the following duties:
- prepare Financial Statements and Reports for the Centre at Mona of The University of the West Indies for the four meetings of the University Finance and General Purposes Committee and the Annual Business Meeting of University Council;
- manage the purchases and payables function as well as the supervision of staff;
- management of the fixed assets process;
- review and post journal entries, approval of payment documentation, liaise with Bursary staff at other campuses on accounting related matters as well as other general accounting and operational duties;
- participate integrally in the annual external financial audit and periodic internal audit processes;
- ensure adherence to The UWI’s internal policies as well as generally accepted accounting practices and standards; and
- provide financial guidance on matters impacting the accounting and financial operations of the Office of Finance and by extension, the University Centre.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate must be a Chartered Accountant (CA) and/or Certified Accountant (ACCA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA); and have:
- A strong academic background evidenced by a Masters with specialization in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related field.
- At least seven (7) years working experience, five (5) of which should be relevant post qualification accounting experience at the supervisory level.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCE
- Proven experience in audit preparation and producing Financial Reports and Statements.
- Proven knowledge of accounting procedures, guidelines and standards including IFRS.
- Knowledge of and experience in using Enterprise solutions such as Banner Finance, as well as proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, sound judgment and a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Emotionally Intelligent - an agile and resilient mindset and excellent inter-personal skills
- Excellent management and leadership skills and command of both written and oral English.
