The incumbent is responsible for registering and monitoring food processing establishments to ensure the wholesomeness and safety of food products for consumption.



This entails monitoring products in the marketplace and ports of entry to ensure compliance with the Standards and Processed Food Acts and their attendant Regulations. The implications are far-reaching to the extent that this could become a matter of litigation, the closing down of markets, and removal from the export trade.



Core Functions:

  • Register food-processing establishments. 
  • Provide support to the facilitation of Technical Committees as required
  • Conduct routine inspections of food processing establishments to ensure compliance with established standards, legislation and regulations
  • Collect and route samples to laboratories for testing and label assessment 
  • Evaluate test results 
  • Issue certificates of Approval and Export
  • Prepare and issue Exemption Letters, Certificates of Health, Hygiene and Free Sale
  • Assist with the training of new inspectors
  • Provide information to manufacturers, importers/traders and consumers on divisional activities/programmes
  • Conduct tests on selected products, and equipment (E.g. Syrup, Sauces and Small scales)
  • Investigate consumer complaints 
  • Prepare daily/monthly reports relating to all activities carried out
  • Recommend enforcement actions to  Supervisor 
  • Recommend product and manufacturing plants for the Certification Mark Programme 
  • Disseminate technical and administrative information in relation to the daily operation of the department to field staff
  • Coordinate intra/inter-departmental projects as assigned
  • Assist in the orientation of new team members as required
  • Coordinate and conduct food safety/quality audits as required
  • Prepare Inspection, Audit reports, special reports and other documents as required 
  • Carry out any other duties assigned
  • Attend meetings and fora
  • Serve as a member of Technical Committees.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  • Training and or practical experiences in the food sciences/food technology
  • Knowledge of good laboratory practices 
  • Comprehensive Knowledge of Processed Food and Standards Acts and their attendant Regulations 
  • Knowledge of other relevant Acts
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Labeling Regulations 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Food Processing Technology 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Quality Assurance and Quality Auditing 
  • Working knowledge of Technical Report Writing 
  • Work co-operatively as a part  of a team
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Work on own initiative and under demanding working conditions

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Science (Food Science/Food Technology) or related degree
  • Training in Public Health
  • Three (3) years of work experience, at least two (2) in a food processing environment
