Under the general direction of the Senior Director, Applied Forest Research the incumbent is responsible for the implementation of a variety of activities related to the Agency €™s research programs.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AREAS:

Administrative Responsibilities  

  • Provides inputs for the operational plans, budget, and the setting of priorities for the Branch;
  • Develops individual work plans that are aligned with organisational goals and objectives;
  • Prepares and submits preliminary progress reports in accordance with the agreed work plan; 
  • Assists in the implementation of approved external requests; 
  • Participates in inter-divisional related activities to achieve the Agency’s objectives; Technical Responsibilities: 
  • Participates in Public awareness and public education activities; 
  • Schedules collection of data from the experimental plots; 
  • Assess seedlings and present documented intervention to prevent and/or mitigate plant pests and diseases; 
  • Conducts data entry, verification, and analysis using relevant research tools and methodologies;  
  • Layouts and monitors experimental plots; 
  • Determines methodology to assess mangroves and swamp forests; 
  • Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time; 

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Individual performance plan completed and submitted within the agreed timeframe and in keeping with established standards;  
  • Preliminary progress reports prepared and submitted using established reporting standards;
  • Adequately participates in public awareness activities as scheduled;  
  • Experimental plots are closely monitored, and data is analyzed accurately;
  • Seedlings assessed and documented intervention presented with accurate recommendations to maintain plant health;  
  • Data entry, verification, and analysis conducted in a timely manner and in keeping with established procedures;  

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

Technical  

  • Experience with ground navigational skills by compasses, maps, and/or the use of hand-held GPS equipment; 
  • Knowledge of field assessment, sampling and monitoring, and evaluation methodologies (i.e., both quantitative and qualitative data collection, processing, and analysis) Ability to interpret spreadsheets and statistical data; 
  • Experience in evaluation, monitoring, and result-based management; 
  • Strong research and analytical skills; 
  • Ability to use office productivity tools efficiently and effectively (Excel, Word, etc.). Behavioural  
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet specific deadlines; 
  • Ability to build partnerships in achieving operational goals; 
  • Strong customer orientation skills; 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate Degree in Forestry, Agriculture, Natural Science, Environmental Management, or related area 
  • Two (2) years research experience in a related field 

OR 

  • Any other acceptable combination of qualifications and experience 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB:

  • Expected to travel island wide;  
  • May be expected to work on weekends, public holidays, and nights; 
  • Expected to work outdoors under climatic and physically challenging conditions;
  • Physical fitness to hike moderate to long distances off the beaten track in order to conduct the required field assessment and data collection.
