The North-East Regional Health Authority invites applications from suitable qualified persons to fill the position of Medical Technologist at the Port Maria Hospital.

 

QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Diploma in Medical Technology from an accredited institution plus completion of the prescribed period of internship. 
  • Two (2) years working experience 
  • Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications 

 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND SPECIALISED TECHNIQUES:

  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of clinical Chemistry, Microbiology, Histopathology, Haematology, Blood Banking and Cytology. 
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques and procedures. 
  • Knowledge of the care and preservation of specimens. 
  • Knowledge of the care and maintenance of laboratory equipment. 
  • Ability to accurately perform standard laboratory procedures, and to observe results.
  • Ability to recognize human tissue and fluids. 
  • Skill in operating laboratory equipment and apparatus. 
  • Skill in collecting specimens efficiently and painlessly. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Receives samples, records description, prepares slides, stain tissues, makes microscopic examinations. Prepares bacteriological media to be used in propagating cultures. 
  • Prepares simple reagents for use in clinical laboratory tests. 
  • Cultivates pathologic bacteria and other microorganisms for detection and identification of diseases such as Typhoid, Cholera, Tuberculosis, Diphtheria. 
  • Takes blood samples, carries out a qualitative screen of all blood serum, performs tests to identify abnormalities such as sickle cell, Anaemia, Coagulation disorders, Hypertension and Diabetes.
  • Prepare films of blood to determine white blood cells differential cell count. Identifies blood groups.
  • Prepare serological samples to provide qualitative and quantitative analysis of antibodies to specific diseases. 
  • Maintain files of tests completed and maintain laboratory equipment.
