Operating Theatre Technician (HTAC/HT 2) - Black River Hospital

Qualifications and Experience:

• Training in Operating Theatre Techniques 
• Minimum of two (2) ‘O’ Level/CXC subjects or equivalent including English Language and a Science subject. 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:

• Knowledge and use of operating theatre techniques and aseptic techniques. 
• Ability to communicate effectively 
• Ability to control operations of scrub and sterilizing rooms. 
• Excellent customer service skills required with the ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public. 
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to ask questions, when necessary
• Ability to generate or adapt technology and equipment to serve patient’s needs. 
• Ability to read, interpret and present information and ideas. 
• Ability to organize actions or things in a proper order according to set of rules. 
• Must maintain good interpersonal relationship with all members of the health team and recognize the need to communicate relevant information 
• Must be alert and anticipate the needs of the surgeon during an operative procedure
• Must be able to prepare the theatre to enable surgeries to commence on time. 
• Able to make thorough count of swabs and instruments. 

Key responsibilities will include:

• Adheres to the principles of operating theatre techniques and aseptic techniques. 
• Checks scrub room to ensure there are soap, dispensers, alcohol, packs, gloves and paper towels.
• Empties suction bottles. 
• Collects extra table fittings and furniture as requested by the nurse assigned to the sterilizing room.
• Assists with the checking of the sluice room for adequate preparation. 
• Cleans and replenishes scrub room. 
• Clears and cleans prep trolleys 
• Collects and cleans furniture for next case as required and place in the sterilizing room
• Wipes swab rack, kick buckets and prepare them for reuse. 
• Cleans and sanitizes the operating table and fittings. 
• Washes instruments and place in appropriate trays and containers. 
• Checks operating list to identify the number of cases so as to the make the required preparations.
• Scrubs and prepares trolleys fifteen minutes before operation begins. 
• Checks trolley for correct and adequate instruments, sutures, needles and miscellaneous items.
• Hands instruments to surgeons during operative procedures and anticipates the surgeon’s needs under the supervision of the nurse. 
• Checks swabs and instruments along with the floor nurse. 
• Makes frequent checks of instruments. 
• Performs swab count for all cases except craniotomies and endoscopies: 
  • first before operation with floor nurse 
  • second during operation, eg. Closure of any hollow organs or cavity, such as a uterus, bladder, stomach, etc.
  • checks additional swabs issued during case 
  • reports missing items immediately
• Keeps trolley and mayo table clean and tidy at all times. 
• Collects specimen for surgeon, gets correct details and give to floor nurse. 
• Cleans trolley after operation 
• Helps to clean and restock theatre at the end of the operating list. 
• Adheres to the infection control policies which guides the Operating Theatre.
• Any other related duties that may be assigned by the Nurse in charge or the Medical Staff. 

Special Conditions associated with the job:

• Works in a surgical environment with exposure to blood and body parts
