Administratively, monitors equipment, implements clinical programs, liaises with agencies, and maintains reports. Technically, assesses patients, develops treatment plans, and collaborates with medical staff. Supervises and mentors junior therapists.

 

Job Purpose:

The Physiotherapist is responsible for developing, maintaining or restoring motor function and movement of patients using evidence-based practice. The incumbent also identifies and maximizes quality of life and movement potential by using the principles of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention, habilitation and rehabilitation. 

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.Sc. Degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited tertiary Institution Or Diploma in Physical Therapy 
  • Successful completion of the prescribed period of internship 
  • Specialist Certification/advanced specialist degree in an area of Physiotherapy 
  • Certificate or Diploma in Supervisory Management/Adult Instruction/Clinical Education
  • Registration with the Council for the Professions Supplementary to Medicine 
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience in the public health system

Key Responsibilities will include:

ADMINISTRATIVE 

  • Monitoring equipment, furniture and physical plant and refers to the Supervisor/Manager of Physiotherapy Services any repairs and general upkeep needs identified. 
  • Implementing and monitors clinical programme for interns and students. 
  • Recommending procurement of relevant equipment and supplies. 
  • Liaising with government agencies, health promotion specialists, public health specialists to provide specialized services in the health centres, community and external facilities. 
  • Maintaining statistical reports as required. 
  • Assisting in annual inventory stock taking exercise. 

TECHNICAL 

  • Assessing, examining and determining treatment plan for patients referred for rehabilitation care. 
  • Collecting information on patients’ prior function, physical abilities and identifies the patients’ expectations of physiotherapy. 
  • Sharing information and explanations with patients and other relevant persons about the purpose of the physiotherapy assessment, any relevant risks and options. 
  • Developing home programmes for patients as necessary. 
  • Assisting in establishing ongoing rehabilitation services.
  • Sharing and collaborating with medical staff (doctors, nurses, porters, social workers and dietician) in discussing vital information for the care, medication, feeding, physical movement, progress and referral of patients and makes recommendations as required. 
  • Developing a discharge or transition of care plan; prepares patient for discharge.
  • Preparing transfer summaries and referrals to other practitioners for patients leaving their care who need continued physiotherapy intervention 
  • Recording patients’ clinical data and other information as required. 
  • Attending and participates in ward rounds. 
  • Liaising with the Unit Supervisor to determine the intake into the Specialist Unit.
  • Maintaining criteria for specialist status. 
  • Participating in presentations and educational/training sessions on physiotherapy related activities. 
  • Keeping up to date with current trends/advancements in the physiotherapy profession.
  • Developing programmes and assisting with group interventions outside their primary facilities. 

SUPERVISORY 

  • Supervises junior therapists, interns and students by way of: 
    • Auditing patients’ notes and making recommendations on treatment to be administered
    • Overseeing assessments 
    • Monitoring performance and making recommendations for improvement 
  • Monitors the case load and allocates patients to therapists/interns/students 
  • Conducting performance appraisals and recommends training and other development programmes for direct reports. 
  • Providing guidance to staff through effective planning, delegation, communication, and coaching. 

 

Special Conditions associated with the job:

  • Required to move around the facility to attend to patients’
