Strategic Objectives/Purpose of the Division
Under the general direction of the Management Information Systems Director ensures that all policies and procedures relating to the management of the Management Information System are adhered to in the execution of his/her duties within the Region. The incumbent is responsible for the installation and management of all systems including PC/Server networks. Functions also include the responsibility for general systems administration.
JOB PURPOSE
The job of the System Administrator essentially involves the application of knowledge of information technology, information technology techniques and principles to the development or maintenance of Information Systems. It includes co-ordinating the overall development and maintenance of computer systems and computing services. The incumbent is responsible for the installation and management of all systems including PC/Server networks. Functions also include the responsibility for general systems administration.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED.
- Familiarity with hubs/routers & LAN/WAN
- Working knowledge of WINDOWS NT environment and administrative techniques
- Working knowledge of network implementation & techniques
- General UNIX environment knowledge
- Troubleshooting skills
- Knowledge of at least one programming language
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Diploma in Computer Science or Equivalent industry certification;
- Training in the configuration & management of networks
- Three (3) years' experience in systems administration
REQUIRED SKILLS AND SPECIALIZED TECHNIQUES:
- Good analytical skills and sound judgment
- Good time management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Required to work beyond normal working hours, as necessary to meet deadlines and to ensure that networks are up and running at all times
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for general P.C. workstation installation, debugging and support
- Provide server and domain Support
- Undertake network expansion and rearrangement, and upgrade operating systems.
- Responsible for application installation and maintenance.
- Assist in defining the infra structural and environmental requirements of network devices.
- Develop operating, instructing and testing procedures to ensure that desired results are produced from various applications.
- Ensure the smooth and continuous operation of computers and all systems within the Region.
- Assist in developing standards and documentation of network configurations and ensure adherence to these standards.
- Provide user & technical support to all systems
- Conduct regular maintenance of computer systems
- Develop and maintain user, technical, installation and network manuals on all computer systems.
- Design, develop, and monitor security performance and its compatibility with supporting computer networks and communication software and hardware.
- Participate in seminars & meetings to discuss systems and program design.
- Supervise the installation of computers and peripherals.
- Assist with the training of all users.
- Perform other related duties assigned from time to time.

- Approve the work of contractors
