The incumbent supports the Regional & International Trade Branch by analyzing technical documents to formulate national positions, ensuring competitiveness of Jamaica's products, and managing contact points for trade issues.

 

Job Purpose

The incumbent facilitates the smooth operation of the Regional & International Trade Branch by playing an integral role in the review and analysis of technical documents to formulate national positions which can be utilized in the BSJ's decision and policy making process. Maintaining the competitiveness of Jamaica's products and services is critical; therefore the incumbent will be expected to effectively and efficiently manage the BSJ's Contact Points on regional and international affairs to inform policy makers and SMEs about trade issues/information relating to the implementation of standards, technical regulations and conformity assessment procedures for market access. 

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in providing technical advice to the parent Ministry on issues in Trade Agreements that may impact the success of Jamaican Businesses.
  • Provides technical support to the Regional & International Trade Branch by reviewing texts emanating from the various bilateral and multilateral agreements with the aim of preparing national responses.
  • Assists with the management of Contact points and Enquiry Points for WTO/TBT, EPA any other assigned.
  • Monitors the requirements for accessing various trade markets to ascertain the market requirements and translate the same to standard requirements.
  • Develops and maintains a database for Jamaica's major trading partners and market access requirements to strengthen exporting SMEs competitiveness, optimize their products value chain to achieve export readiness and gain market share.
  • Provides business support services to exporting enterprises (SMEs) through client servicing programmesiness partnership programme and disseminating information on market access requirements relevant to reduce trade barriers and costs.
  • Processes queries and/or requests for information from international entities.
  • Download, disseminate and implement procedures, guidelines and best practices from the various international websites for the purpose of informing and improving the operations of the Secretariat in order to enhance service quality to both internal and external customers.
  • Provides assistance with the compilation of national, regional and international reports such as those required by the CARICOM Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ).
  • Provide technical assistance and coordination of regional and international projects and activities
  • Prepares submissions for the Standards & Technical Committee of the BSJ's Standards Council.
  • Follow-up on action items (initiated by the Supervisor/Director) issued to the various process owners both internally and externally.
