Objective/Purpose of the Job:
The Farm Mechanic is responsible for ensuring the reliability, safety, and optimal performance of tractors, heavy-duty diesel machinery, Mechanic farm equipment, and vehicles used in dairy operations. The role focuses on preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and minimizing equipment downtime to support uninterrupted milk production and farm efficiency.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine servicing, diagnostics, and repairs on tractors, loaders, generators, pumps, and other diesel-powered farm equipment
- Conduct preventative maintenance programs to reduce breakdowns and extend equipment lifespan
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine faults using appropriate tools and manuals
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns to minimize operational downtime
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs, service records, and parts usage
- Ensure all machinery repairs comply with safety, environmental, and farm operating standards
- Assist with installation, commissioning, and testing of new or refurbished equipment
- Maintain workshop cleanliness, tools, and spare parts inventory
- Always wear personal protective gear assigned whilst engaged in welding activities
- Participate in Training activities when required and perform good housekeeping on all jobs assigned
- Perform any other related duties assigned, including any other procedure or techniques to improve efficiency.
Work Environmental
The nature of this work may require work in hazardous environments, exposure to confined spaces, noise, dust, cold, heat, electricity and open flames. While performing duties of this job, would occasionally be required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls. Late work may be necessary as the workload dictates. This may include weekdays, weekends, and /or holidays. Required to be on 24/hours call-out duty.
Requirements
Academic/Technical/Management: Experience and Qualifications:
- Certificate or Diploma in Diesel Mechanics, Heavy Duty Equipment Maintenance, Automotive Technology, or a related field
- Formal training in tractor and agricultural machinery maintenance is an asset
- Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
Abilities; Skills; Experience; Aptitude and Judgement:
- Minimum 3–5 years’ hands-on experience working with tractors and heavy-duty diesel equipment
- Proven experience in agricultural, dairy, or farm-based mechanical environments preferred
- Experience with hydraulic systems, diesel engines, transmissions, and basic electrical system
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for diesel engines and farm machinery
- Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Ability to read service manuals, schematics, and maintenance schedules
- Good record-keeping and reporting skills.
